Speaking to a packed meeting of students, MPs, councillors and local Lib Dem supporters, Vince Cable MP called for diversification of Britain's economy to beat the recession.
Dr Cable called for reduced dependence on the City of London, for investment in education and skills and in knowledge-based industries such as sustainable technology. He welcomed the rise in small businesses and self-employment and called for a 'smarter, greener, cleaner' approach to economic activity. Universities have a vital role in giving people the skills they need to make our country prosperous and sustainable.
Lib Dems here in Brighton are appalled by the proposed cuts at the University of Sussex, as cuts in education must inevitably stiffle this much-needed development of economic activity.
Kemptown parliamentary candidate, Dr Juliet Williams (on right of picture), has called on the Vice Chancellor to find better ways forward to save and create local jobs at the University.
